Motivated by the love of Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, New Tribes Mission exits to assist the ministry of the local church through the mobilizing, equipping and coordinating of missionaries to evangelize unreached people groups, translate the Scriptures, and see indigenous New Testament Churches established that truly glorify God.

Some 4,000 isolated ethnic groups-tribes-still have no access to the Gospel. New Tribes Mission (NTM), established in 1942, is a faith-based mission organization dedicated to making a difference. Knowing that the first opportunity for tribal people to see Jesus is in missionaries' relationships with them and other missionaries, it is our personal goal to live the message of the Gospel through our actions before we can teach it with our words. Relationships grow in years spent studying the tribal language and culture, and preparing for teaching. Trust develops as church planters give medical help and teach people to read and write.

Distinctives of New Tribes Mission

  • Importance of Learning the Culture and Language of the Target People

We believe that it is vital to learn the heart language and culture of the people group we are working with. By "heart language" I am referring to the language the people laugh and cry in. Language and culture are inseparable. Their language is the vocal expression of their culture.

Without a solid understanding of their culture and language it would be impossible to know what message we are really conveying as we attempt to teach them the message of the Gospel. With something as severe as eternity at stake we want to make as few mistakes as possible.

  • Teaching Literacy

The majority of these groups are not only illiterate, but have no written alphabet in their language. Part of planting an indigenous church is developing an alphabet in their language and teaching them how to read and write. Being able to read and study the Word of God, which we translate into their language, is essential for the survival of the church we plant.

  • Chronological Approach to Teaching Scripture

The first story is the first story-Creation. Then key Old Testament accounts are presented chronologically. These lessons teach the holiness of God, the sinfulness of man, God's love for man, and His plan for a Deliverer. By hearing and reviewing the main Old Testament stories, the people receive a firm biblical foundation.

When the missionary teaches the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, the people have a clear understanding of why Christ died and what He did on the Cross for them. Those who place their trust in Him realize that salvation is God's free gift to them. This provides a solid foundation for ongoing discipleship.

"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned."

        Romans 5:12 (NIV)
